Stephen Covey brought an age-old reality to the surface 20 years ago with his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In this book he talked about how each person is made up of 4 major parts: Mind, Body, Heart and Spirit. He talked further the importance of culitvating each of these 4 consistently in order to enjoy the fullness of life that we were created for.
Even though Covey’s teaching was aimed at the secular marketplace, he did not shy away from the reality that the Spirit is at the center. He went on to teach that the best way to go about our week it to have something that we are doing each week to further these 4 areas of life. So, something that nourishes the Physical, Mental, Social and Spiritual. I have been following this teaching for the past 15 years and it has been a game changer for me. At the beginning of each week I write down one or two things for each category that will aide in furthering my overall health as a human being. These items are simple: eg, workout three times, read 40 pages of ________, 20 min of silence each morning, dinner with ________. Keeping balance in these 4 areas, and having the Spiritual as the top priority, has become a great rhythm for living with purpose.
